Chapter Fifteen
Liz
“You have a visitor, Liz,” my assistant’s voice sounded through the intercom.
“A visitor? Do you know who it is?” I wasn’t expecting another client and all of my friends would have called ahead or texted before showing up. Except for – “It’s not Charlotte, is it?”
“No.” I heard a small giggle. “He’s definitely male.” And attractive, based on how she was acting. Whoever it was had rendered my assistant Natalie back down to school girl status.
My mind instantly thought of Anthony, though that couldn’t be right. He didn’t have a car and didn’t have the money for a cab. Why the hell had my mind immediately wandered to him anyway? I hadn’t even known the guy a month ago and now he was on my shortlist of potential surprise visitors?
And sadly, he was the only welcomed male visitor on that list. Because the other options (Eddie and Adam) could go to hell so far as I was concerned.
Well, maybe not literal hell in Eddie’s case. He may be a pain in the ass, but he was still my brother, after all.
Attempting to quell the excitement building in my stomach, I told Natalie to send whoever it was on back. A few seconds later, Anthony’s increasingly sandy head peaked through my cracked door. Guess he wasn’t lying when he said he went on daily walks around the city. “Hello, honey.”
His grin almost had me smiling back at him and I had to remind myself I was mad at him. He was fishing around for information on Robbie again and I couldn’t have that. “What are you doing here?”
“I brought you lunch.” Holding out a plastic bag, he swung it out towards me. “Veggie and tofu stir-fry. I figured you would prefer it hot off the wok rather than reheating something cooked the night before,” he continued at my stunned expression.
He had brought me lunch. No one had ever brought me lunch before and I couldn’t decide if I was happy he’d done it or if I wanted to knee him in the groin.
Okay, I had to be realistic about this. He likely had an angle. It bothered me I hadn’t figured out yet what this whole twenty day trial bullshit request was all about and he must have gone through a great deal of trouble to bring me this lunch.
Focusing on the latter thought for now, I came around the desk so there was no furniture separating us. As a lawyer, I’ve become very good at reading body language, particularly while under heavy questioning. It was about time my ‘husband’ became acquainted with my talent.
Leaning back against the ledge of the desk, I took him in. “How did you get here?”
“I walked.” He shook the bag, the movement not so much nervous as irritated. “Are you going to take this bag or am I just supposed to hold on to the food while you give me the third degree?”
I gestured for him to set it down on the desk. “Walked, huh? That’s about.
